Rolando Espina: The ultramarathoner balancing passion, profession, and a legacy of victories

In the world of extreme endurance sports, few names resonate as powerfully as Rolando Espina.

The Ireland-based Filipino nurse and ultramarathoner recently made headlines once again by conquering the grueling Dumaguete-to-Bacolod Endurance Race, finishing in an impressive 32 hours, 56 minutes, and 10 seconds.

This latest victory adds to an already illustrious career in ultramarathon running. Espina is a seven-time finisher of the prestigious Spartathlon in Greece and claimed second runner-up in the Ultramarathon Milan-Sanremo, where he completed the punishing 285-kilometer race in 36 hours and 40 minutes.

Despite his relentless pursuit of excellence, Espina remains humble. In a heartfelt social media post following his latest triumph, he expressed gratitude to his supporters:

“Friends who waited for our arrival, it was so kind of you guys. To everyone who supported us along the route, there’s too many of you to mention, we are forever grateful.”

A Balancing Act: Nurse, Athlete, and Philanthropist

Beyond the races and medals, Espina exemplifies a remarkable ability to balance his demanding nursing career, rigorous training, and family life. When asked about his secret to success before flying back to Ireland, he jokingly remarked, “Naka-tsamba lang.” (I just got lucky.)

But luck has little to do with his achievements. Espina’s dedication and discipline recently took him to Italy, where he served as one of the pacers for the world-renowned Rome Marathon.

This event, hailed as the “Best Sporting Event of 2024” by the prestigious Best Events Award (BEA), saw over 40,000 participants, making it the most attended sporting event in Italy. The marathon’s growing reputation as a world-class competition highlights Espina’s privilege in pacing alongside elite runners from the USA, Spain, the Netherlands, Italy, Ireland, the UK, and the UAE.

Espina takes immense pride in contributing to this success, particularly as one of six Filipino international pacers who played a crucial role in guiding marathoners to their personal bests.

This year’s Jubilee edition of the Rome Marathon promises to be even more momentous, uniting athletes from across the globe in celebration of endurance, unity, and the human spirit.

Espina’s impact extends far beyond personal records and international accolades. His deep compassion for others led him to organize a charity race last year to support children battling cancer in Negros.

By using his passion for running as a platform to raise awareness and funds, Espina proves that endurance sports can be a powerful vehicle for change.

Espina’s running resume is nothing short of extraordinary. Some of his most remarkable accomplishments include:
