President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has signed into law a measure declaring May 16 as “Education Support Personnel Day” and making it a special working holiday to honor non-teaching personnel.
Under Republic Act No. 12178, the Department of Education and the Commission on Higher Education were designated as the lead agencies in the preparation and implementation of the annual program of activities for the observance of the National Education Support Personnel Day.
The new law defines education support personnel as individuals employed in teaching-related or non-teaching positions in any public or private school, college, university or other educational institution.
These include teaching assistants, registrars, librarians, doctors, nurses, division counselors, counselors and counselor associates, guidance counselors, psychologists, clerks, and the rest of the professional, administrative, technical and general staff who provide support to learners, students and teaching personnel.
The amount necessary to implement RA 12178 will be included in the annual General Appropriations Act.
