No walls, no limits: Iloilo goes digital with Provincial Library access

ILOILO – “You don’t have to go to the library, but you can access publications through your gadgets.”

Provincial Administrator Raul Banias shared this good news to his fellow Ilonggos on Tuesday as the Iloilo Provincial Library and Archives officially launched its digital platforms, signaling a new chapter in how residents and scholars access knowledge in the digital age.

Held at the Capitol Lobby, the launch event marked the debut of a fully accessible online library system, a pioneering move aimed at making government publications, historical records, and learning tools available to anyone, anytime, anywhere.

“This is the future of libraries. We’re bringing books and information straight to the hands of the people,” Banias added, highlighting the provincial government’s commitment to educational innovation under the leadership of Governor Arthur Defensor, Jr.

The digital transformation features four new online tools:

·         Library Website (iloiloprovinciallibrary.com) – For news, events, and general information;

·         Digital Library (iloiloelibrary.com) – A repository of government documents, Ilonggo heritage materials, and learning resources;

·         Virtual Reference Services – Real-time online help from library staff;

·         Bookshare – A specialized e-library with assistive features for users with reading disabilities.

Library and Archives Chief Allana Delgado emphasized that this digital leap allows the library to break its physical limitations. “The library can now serve users even if they never step inside the building,” she said.

Students, educators, librarians, and department heads from the Iloilo Provincial Government attended the event. They were encouraged to explore the platforms by scanning QR codes available at the venue, while enjoying free coffee—a warm touch to an otherwise tech-forward affair.

Although Defensor was not present at the launch due to prior commitments, he was praised for championing educational access in the province. “Our governor is very passionate about education. The habit and the passion for reading—we are really inculcating this to our children,” Banias said.
