Reinforcing its commitment to become a senior citizen-friendly city, the Iloilo City government opened on Monday an outdoor gym, among other projects aimed at enhancing the well-being of its elderly and other residents.
The workout space at Plaza Libertad was formally opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by Mayor Jerry Treñas and Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Regional Director Juan Jovian Ingeniero.
Treñas said the new gym will help older residents maintain their physical health in line with the city’s inclusive vision for wellness across all age groups. Alongside the gym, a newly constructed public restroom was also opened—a project financed by the DILG Local Government Support Fund.
In addition to promoting fitness, the city has also taken strides in preserving its cultural heritage. The iconic fountain at Plaza Libertad has been restored with the help of Escuela Taller, a group of artists specializing in heritage conservation.
Meanwhile, on a broader public health front, 150 individuals aged 15 and up benefited from a free chest x-ray initiative spearheaded by the Iloilo Provincial Health Office (IPHO) in partnership with the Philippine Tuberculosis Society Inc. (PTSI).
The initiative was held in celebration of the 124th Semana sang Iloilo.
The free chest x-ray program aims to enhance early detection and control of tuberculosis (TB), particularly in remote communities. PTSI deployed their newly acquired ultraportable x-ray machine, which can be transported to isolated areas, including islands and far-flung barangays.
The machine is equipped with integrated Artificial Intelligence (AI), enabling real-time TB detection from chest x-ray scans.
