Duterte assures he is ‘fine’ after medical check-up—PH Embassy

Former President Rodrigo Duterte has undergone a medical check-up while in detention at the International Criminal Court (ICC), the Philippine Embassy in the Netherlands confirmed.

According to the Embassy, Duterte called through an ICC Detention Officer at The Hague to inform them of his condition.

“During the call, the former President conveyed, among others, that he underwent medical check-up and has received medical care and that he is generally fine,” the Embassy said on Friday (Thursday in the Netherlands).

During the conversation, Duterte also requested a consular visit, as well as assistance in arranging visits from a family member and his legal counsel, former Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea.

“Thereupon, the Embassy made such request to the Registry of the ICC to facilitate a Consular Visit to the former President as soon as possible,” the Embassy said.

The ICC has released its registry notifying the public that Medialdea will serve as one of Duterte’s legal counsel in his case.

Duterte’s daughter, Vice President Sara Duterte, is also in The Netherlands to help her father and their lawyers organize their defense.

The former President remains in detention following the warrant of arrest served by the ICC through the Interpol in cooperation with Philippine authorities. He will face trial for alleged crimes against humanity in connection with his administration’s bloody war on drugs.
