DOJ, UNODC to intensify cybercrime enforcement in Philippines

The Department of Justice (DOJ) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) will be holding a discussion to strengthen criminal justice in the country, especially on intensified enforcement of cybercrime laws.

Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla himself will be leading the group of officials to negotiate the details of the partnership with UNODC Executive Director Ghada Fathi Waly.

Said meeting is set to happen on the sidelines of the 68th Session of the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs in Vienna, Austria.

They are looking at signing a comprehensive Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) to cover the various justice sector programs, including prison reform and forensics in May.

For his part, Justice Undersecretary Jesse Hermogenes Andres, who is leading the conversations with UNODC’s team in the country, envisions institutionalizing the government’s ability to procure and utilize the necessary digital forensic tools and software applications used in cybercrime investigations.

He stressed that funding for the renewal of licenses for these important investigative tools must always be given priority.
