Palace welcomes NPA mass surrender

A MALACANANG official welcomed a large group of New People’s Army (NPA) rebels who have surrendered and are set to undergo a reintegration program in Davao de Oro.

In a statement, the Palace said the surrenderees consisting of 189 regular NPA combatants and 43 members of the People’s Militia, also turned in a total of 74 firearms.

“This is not just about laying down arms, but a new beginning, a new hope for those ready to change their lives,” special assistant to the President Anton Lagdameo Jr. said.

Armed Forces of the Philippines chief Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. said the NPA’s strength has dramatically declined, with rebel numbers dropping to 1,111 in 2024 from 2,200 the previous year.

As part of the terms of surrender, the former rebels received food packs and kitchen kits from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), plus and P5,000 each financial assistance from the Office of the President.

Lagdameo expressed optimism that the mass surrender would inspire other insurgents to follow suit, encouraging them to seize the opportunity for change.

The former rebels will also enrol in the Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program (E-CLIP), which will guide them through reintegration.

Military officers and local chief executives, including Bukidnon Gov. Rogelio Neil Roque and Davao Occidental Gov. Franklin Bautista also witnessed the event.
