The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded 17 volcanic earthquakes in Mount Kanlaon over the past 24 hours.
Three of the volcanic tremors lasted from six to 96 minutes long, while three ash emission events lasting from two to 187 minutes were also observed.
The volcano emitted 5,222 tons of sulfur dioxide (SO2) a day on Jan. 16, higher than the 3,341 tons a day SO2 recorded on Jan. 13.
Phivolcs said Kanlaon Volcano continued its degassing with occasional ash emissions drifting southwest and generating plumes measuring 200 meters. Its edifice was also inflated.
Alert Level 3 remains hoisted over the volcano. Phivolcs, in its latest advisory, recommended the residents’ evacuation from the six-kilometer radius from the volcano’s summit.
Mount Kanlaon is an active stratovolcano and the highest mountain on the Negros Island Region. It remains under a state of unrest since a major eruption last December 9, 2024.
