Police have issued a warning to the public regarding criminal groups expected to operate in commercial centers, shopping malls, public transportation, and other crowded areas in Metro Manila during the holiday season.
The Southern Police District (SPD) released a public advisory about the tactics used by petty criminals, particularly pickpockets.
The SPD warned that groups of three to five individuals often work together in shopping venues. They typically dress smartly and may involve a child or those pretending to be disabled or pregnant, all while behaving like ordinary shoppers to avoid drawing attention.
Meanwhile, in public transport, criminals board separately and approach their targets, creating a distraction to facilitate the slow theft of valuables, such as wallets and mobile phones.
SPD Director Brig. Gen. Bernard Yang has since reassured the public about their safety during this festive season, directing the deployment of 2,154 police officers to provide comprehensive security coverage in key areas, including places of convergence, places of worship, railways, transport terminals, malls, and markets.
In addition to SPD personnel, 2,069 officers from allied forces and support groups will participate in the operations.
“We anticipate a surge in visitors to malls, parks, churches, and other popular destinations during the holiday season,” Yang said.
