19 non-lawyers nabbed for notarial practice

THE National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) on Friday disclosed the arrest of 19 people suspected of unlawful practice of notary public.

NBI Director Jaime Santiago said the operation stemmed from a complaint filed by the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) against dubious persons engaged in notary public services in Quezon City, notably in the Bago Bantay area.

The agents raided notary public stalls being used by non-lawyers performing notarial acts, Santiago said.

Acting on the IBP complaint, Santiago formed a team of operatives from the NBI- Special Task Force (STF) who conducted a series of surveillance and undercover operations, in effect confirming the veracity of the information.

Santiago said the operatives conducted simultaneous entrapment operations on Tuesday, resulting in the arrest of the suspects.

Those arrested were identified as Sherryl L. Bonifacio, Uldarico C. Francisco, Chirester H. Cancino, Lou Anna T. Acuna, Ellaine Lucena, Chester Adrian Layacan, Violeta M. Oraa, Jovelyn B. Concepcion, Thelma C. Concepcion, Ma. Cholina M. Torino, Elma y Pol Luod, Virginia Alcantara, Eduardo y De Guzman Concepcion, Violeta y Concepcion Fronda, Val Justine Concepcion Laxamana, Chona Mendoza Concepcion, Marites Castillo Longcop, Christopher De Guzman Cancino, and Marie Antonette Garido Miranda.

Santiago commended the operatives of NBI-STF for their swift action on the complaint.
