Wooden toys

This file photograph, taken on Feb. 26, 2025, shows an artisan keeping the painted heads of dolls for drying at a toy manufacturing unit, in Channapatna in the Ramanagara district of India’s Karnataka state, famed for its wood and lacquer toys, carved from ivory wood from a local deciduous tree — and dipped in brightly colored dye from natural ingredients including turmeric and indigo. Channapatna’s toy making industry dates back to the 1700s when Tipu Sultan, ruler of the then kingdom of Mysore, asked artists from Persia to train the locals.
