Hontiveros: Filipinos in Israel, Iran must be brought to safety now

Senator Risa Hontiveros on Thursday called on the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) to expedite the repatriation of Filipinos in Israel and Iran as tensions in the region intensify.

“Filipinos living in Israel and Iran must be brought to safety immediately,” she said in a statement.

The senator said that Filipinos in areas already affected by missile attacks should be prioritized for immediate or even mandatory evacuation if needed.

Hontiveros emphasized the urgency of moving citizens to safety before the conflict escalates further, as well as preparing Philippine government agencies to receive returning overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).

“Reintegration programs, livelihood assistance, and psychosocial support should be in place for evacuees,” she said.

Hontiveros warned that the timeline of the conflict remains uncertain and that the country must be prepared for any eventuality.

“Considering the potential number of Filipinos who may have to be evacuated from the region if this escalates, the government has to start organizing and making sure contingency plans are in place,” she reminded.

The senator’s statement comes amid ongoing cross-border attacks in the Middle East that have raised concerns about the safety of overseas workers.

Several nations and international organizations have already issued warnings about the deteriorating security conditions in parts of Israel and Iran.

The Philippine embassies in Tel Aviv and Tehran have also advised Filipinos to remain alert and to coordinate with officials for updates.

“We don’t know when this conflict will subside. Government must be ready for all possible scenarios and ensure that no Filipino is left behind in this conflict,” Hontiveros said.
