The Philippine Navy rescued 90 passengers from a vessel that experienced engine failure and drifted off the coast of Languyan, Tawi-Tawi, on June 12.
The wooden-hulled ML LEN-LYN was traveling from Pangutaran, Sulu, to Sibutu, Tawi-Tawi when it encountered mechanical trouble around 1:30 p.m.
A passenger sent a distress message via a mobile app, which was picked up by the crew of the BRP General Mariano Alvarez (PS176).
The Navy coordinated with Naval Task Force 61 and responded to the emergency, locating the drifting vessel 3.4 nautical miles north of Tumbagaan Island. It was later towed to Chinese Pier in Bongao, Tawi-Tawi.
All passengers were unharmed. The Navy said the rescue highlights its commitment to maritime safety and protecting lives at sea in Western Mindanao.
Rear Admiral Donn Anthony Miraflor, commander of the Western Mindanao Naval Command, praised the swift action of the BRP General Mariano Alvarez crew and emphasized the importance of maintaining rapid-response capabilities for sea emergencies.
The Navy urged seafarers and inter-island vessel operators to regularly check engine conditions and ensure emergency communication tools are functional before departure to prevent such incidents.
Maritime authorities said the rescued passengers were mostly residents returning to their hometowns. Some were transported to temporary shelters and given food, water, and basic medical aid upon arrival in Bongao.
