‘Pinoy crewmen of sunken cargo vessel all safe’

The 20 Filipino crewmen of an ill-starred cargo vessel were all safe and now awaiting repatriation, according to the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW).

The group was aboard the M/V MSC Elsa 3 which capsized off the coast of Kochi, Kerala, India last May 24.

Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac said the seafarers are currently staying at a local hotel in Kochi where they are receiving assistance from representatives of their employer based in India.

“They will remain there for the next few days as relevant authorities continue their investigation into the incident, ensuring that all necessary steps are taken before their repatriation,” Cacdac said.

The local manning agency of the Filipino seamen will provide adequate legal support and interpreters as they participated in the investigation conducted by Indian authorities.

“The DMW will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide timely updates. We stand ready to extend any and all assistance required by the seafarers and their families,” Cacdac said.
