In-form Eala braces for Paris Open debut

FILIPINA tennis sensation Alex Eala will be making her debut at the 2025 Roland Garros this Sunday in her best form, at least in the world rankings.

Eala, who is making waves with her phenomenal performance this year, improved one spot to No. 69 in the World Tennis Association Singles rankings, and leapfrogged to No. 224 in the doubles. She improved by one spot after spending the previous two weeks ranked 70th in the world.

The Filipina tennis star, who will celebrate her 20th birthday on Friday, improved even after a first-round exit at the Italian Open.

Eala made a giant leap of 232 notches in the doubles to climb to 224th.

Alex and world no. 2 Coco Gauff, a wild-card pair who teamed up for the first time, reached the quarterfinals of the recent Italian Open, where they lost in a tight three-setter to eventual champions Jasmine Paolini and Sara Errani of Italy.

Eala was in Mallorca, Spain before departing for Paris for the French Open.

The world No. 70 will turn 20 years old on May 23, two days before her debut at the Roland Garros main draw.

She heads into Paris as a rising contender who has had quite a breakout year so far.

Just in 2025 alone, she has defeated three Top 10 opponents in the same event, became the first Filipina to reach the semi-finals of a Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) 1000 event, and catapulted to a career-high women’s singles ranking of World No. 69—making her the highest-ranked Filipina to do so.
