Denice Zamboanga wields a double-edged sword

“TO whom much is given, much is required.”

As the days go by, Denice Zamboanga is beginning to embrace the full weight of that truth in her role as the fully recognized ONE Women’s Atomweight MMA World Champion.

The 28-year-old from Quezon City officially ascended to the throne after Stamp Fairtex vacated the title. Their highly anticipated unification bout, originally scheduled for August 1 at Ball Arena in Denver, was called off when the Thai megastar reinjured her surgically repaired knee, leaving Zamboanga as the division’s sole titleholder.

Now, the mantle falls squarely on Zamboanga’s shoulders — to represent a division once ruled by beloved predecessors like Stamp and Angela Lee. And so far, “The Menace” is embracing her moment. She’s made public appearances, secured endorsement deals, and carved her name into history as the first Filipina to hold a major world title in mixed martial arts.

But with the spotlight shining brightly outside the cage, the deeper challenge is only beginning to surface: Zamboanga’s reign is not without its shadows.

There’s no question that she worked tirelessly to earn her spot. Still, whispers linger — that the intricately crafted belt was not won in battle but granted by default. For now, that’s a perception she must confront head-on, especially as she steps into a legacy built by champions known for earning their crowns the hard way.

Zamboanga must work twice as hard to silence the doubts. It’s an uphill battle, but not one beyond reach — especially with a compelling list of challengers already forming. No. 2 contender Ayaka Miura looms large, riding a four-fight win streak, three by submission. Strawweight champion Xiong Jing Nan, fresh off a win over ranked contender Meng Bo, could also be in the mix. And of course, there’s unfinished business with Ham Seo Hee, who owns two victories over Zamboanga.

Right now, Zamboanga may be holding the crown with a double-edged sword in hand. But if she meets the demand, turn skeptics into believers, and conquers the challengers ahead, she won’t just be seen as the woman who inherited the throne. She will be remembered as the woman who earned it — and ruled it with undeniable authority.

And when that day comes, there will be no asterisks — only exclamation points.
