FILIPINO Olympic pole vaulter Ernest John Obiena settled for fifth place at 5.72 meters on Saturday evening at the Wanda Diamond League in Keqiao, China.
Obiena, who tried and missed 5.82 meters in all three attempts, tied with Australian Kurtis Marschall at 5.72 meters and got the no. 5 ranking via countback.
Armand Duplantis broke the meet record he set a year ago with a new mark of 6.11m.
Duplantis tried thrice to reset his personal and world record at 6.28 meters, but failed to do so.
Greece’s Emmanouil Karalis leapt to 6.01 meters for second, but could not fly over 6.11 meters in three attempts.
Netherlands’ Menno Vloon cleared 5.82 for the bronze.
Last week, Obiena finished seventh in the Xiamen leg with at 5.62 meters.
Back then, Duplantis, Karalis and Vloon still took home gold, silver and bronze, respectively.
