UP launches impeach primer in 3 PH tongues

The University of the Philippines (UP) College of Law has launched a primer on the impeachment process in Filipino, Cebuano, and Ilocano dialects to educate the general public with basic information on impeachment proceedings.

The state-run school launched the primer in English language last month following the impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte by the House of Representatives.

In an exclusive interview with Manila Standard, assistant professor Paolo Tamase said the translation is a ‘necessary step’ to ensure that Filipinos have a reliable source of the information on legal concepts and jargon that enter the public discourse.

“As it is, the Constitution, laws, rules, and judicial decisions are all in English—a language that is already not accessible to every Filipino. And then impeachment is so rare that its legal concepts and jargon only come once a decade,” he pointed out.
