BOC intercepts P300-k ‘ukay-ukay’ in Sorsogon

The Bureau of Customs (BOC) seized 78 bales of illegally imported used clothes locally called or “ukay-ukay” worth nearly P300,000  at the Port of Matnog in Sorsogon province.

The BOC, in coordination with the Philippine Coast Guard, intercepted a fourteen-wheeler truck loaded with goods while enroute to Masbate province..

“ The importation of second-hand clothes is illegal. Republic Act 4653 prohibits the commercial importation of textile articles commonly known as used clothing and rags,” the BOC said.

The BOC vowed to continue monitoring and enforcing compliance with existing laws, and conduct regular inspections to ensure that all imported goods meet the necessary standards and legal requirements to curb illegal trade practices.
